Photographs and voices from the towns and streets we share
We pair documentary photography with interviews and first-person accounts from communities across Canada, so that ordinary days are recorded with care, patience and respect for the people in them.
- Photo essays with captions and written introductions
- Interviews edited into readable first-person stories
- Every sponsored piece clearly labelled as such
What we make and offer
Our work ranges from long-form photo essays and recorded interviews to portrait sessions, labelled collaborations, archive collections and advertising placements. Each is described below in plain terms, so you can see what it involves.
-
Photo Essays
Long-form visual stories built around a place, a tradition or a group of people. Each essay carries a written introduction and captions that name what is happening in the frame. We spend time in a community before we publish anything about it.
-
Community Interviews
Recorded conversations with local residents, edited into readable first-person stories. Each one is paired with portraits made in the person's own surroundings. Speakers see the final text before it appears, and we keep their words in their own rhythm.
-
Portrait Sessions
Natural-light portrait sessions in a home, workplace or studio for families, makers and community groups. We work unhurriedly and favour relaxed, honest expressions over stiff poses. You receive a selection of edited images after the session.
-
Sponsored Collaborations
Editorial projects made with local organizations, shot and written to the same standards as our own stories. Each one is marked as sponsored wherever it appears. The partner is told at the outset what we will and will not change.
-
Premium Photo Collections
Curated sets of high-resolution documentary photographs drawn from our archive. They are offered for personal viewing and for licensing enquiries. Each collection holds together around a theme, a region or a season, and comes with captions.
-
Display Advertising
Clearly marked advertising placements alongside our stories, for businesses that want to reach thoughtful local readers. Placements are labelled as advertising and kept apart from editorial pages. Daniel Whitfield handles every enquiry.
Photo Essays, from first visit to publication
Introductions and permission
We meet the people involved before the camera comes out, explain what we are making and ask for consent. Anyone can decline to be photographed, and that is respected throughout the project.
Time on location
Margaret Doyle spends several visits in the place, at different hours, so the pictures show routine rather than staged moments. We take notes and names as we go.
Selecting and sequencing
Claire Beaulieu chooses the strongest frames and arranges them so the story builds with a clear order. She writes captions that describe each scene plainly and accurately.
Review before it appears
People featured are invited to read the introduction and captions first. We correct factual errors, then publish the essay with its full credits.

What guides our work
-
Respect
People are never material for us. We ask before we photograph, explain how pictures will be used and let those featured read what we write about them before it is published.
-
Curiosity
We go back to a place more than once and ask questions we do not already know the answers to. That patience tends to show in the pictures and in the quality of the conversations.
-
Honesty
Captions say what happened and where. Sponsored work is labelled as sponsored, advertising is marked as advertising, and we correct errors openly when readers point them out.
Frequently asked questions
These are the questions readers and partners ask most often. If yours is missing, the contact page will reach us directly, and we reply in writing.
What is Harbourlight Stories?
We are a Kingston-based publication, founded in 2014, that pairs documentary photography with interviews and first-person accounts from communities across Canada. We make photo essays, portrait sessions and clearly labelled sponsored collaborations. Our focus is everyday life, local traditions and the people who keep them going, rather than breaking news or politics.
How do I suggest a story or a place?
Use the contact form to tell us about the place, tradition or person, and why it deserves attention. Samuel Okafor or Margaret Doyle will read it and reply. We cannot take on every suggestion, but each is read, and we will say honestly whether it suits our work.
Can I commission a portrait session?
Yes. Portrait sessions are held in a home, workplace or studio, using natural light wherever possible. Send an enquiry through the contact page with the number of people and the location. We then send a written quotation, and payment is by bank transfer after invoicing.
How are sponsored collaborations labelled?
Every sponsored piece carries a visible label at the top and in its listing, naming the partner. It is made to the same standards as our own work, with the same captions and care. Partners do not edit our conclusions, and we agree the scope in writing beforehand.
Are the interviews edited?
Yes, lightly. We record conversations, then cut repetition and arrange the material so it reads clearly in the speaker's own voice. We do not change meaning or add words. The person interviewed sees the text before it is published and can ask for corrections.
Can I licence or buy photographs?
Premium Photo Collections are curated sets of high-resolution images from our archive, offered for personal viewing and licensing enquiries. Nothing is bought on this site. Write to us through the contact page, and we reply with terms and a written quotation.
How does payment work?
You send an enquiry through the contact page, we reply with a written quotation or confirmation, then we issue an invoice. Payment is made by bank transfer. Cancellations and refunds follow our payment and refund policy, which is published on the site.
Do you advertise on the site?
We accept display advertising from businesses that want to reach local readers. Placements are clearly marked as advertising and sit alongside our stories, never inside them. Daniel Whitfield handles enquiries and explains the available placements in writing.
